Bargaining update, November 17th, 2019 – evening

Good evening all,

On Friday, the Faculty Association presented a cheque to CUPE Local 3799 for the amount of $10,000.00. This money will be evenly distributed to those members who have been on the picket line for the first 6 active days of picket duty, 10 days in total since day #1.

I connected with Stephen Rader, President of the Faculty Association, this evening along with Dale Laluk, the Vice President of the Union.

The Faculty Association were in negotiations on Saturday and negotiations will continue tomorrow in the morning. Stephen Rader expressed his frustration with the delay on the employer’s response to the Faculty Association’s proposals and we discussed this at some length. While the Faculty have responses already drafted to an employer proposal, or they can quickly draft a counter proposal, the employer is taking an extended period of time – a full day or a weekend prior to responding or replying. I asked Stephen to express that to the University with upcoming FA updates; that multiple unions are on the line and waiting for a response from the employer, not just the Faculty Association.

Parking at the CN Centre will change for tomorrow and likely moving forward. As of tomorrow, the parking lot is being used for driver training and as such, signs were placed in car windows on Friday asking for vehicles to be re-located or towed for Monday due to this use of the parking area. So, going forward, please park your vehicle in the gravel parking lot to the far left side of where you parked previously, closer to 22nd Avenue, by the CN Centre sign. Paxton Shuttle Service has been notified of this change of location. If you park in the same area, you will likely be towed by the end of the day.

Social media – well, that’s a hot topic, isn’t it? Please be kind and think prior to posting or re-acting to posts. This weekend was difficult for both the Faculty Association and CUPE with misleading/incorrect statements. I believe the matters have been addressed but I’m not sure as I don’t use Twitter, Instagram, etc.

The Executive is looking to schedule a special general membership meeting this week to discuss things before us.  We want to convey what we know and we want to hear from the membership as well. We have started to look into booking a location at either the Ramada or the Coast downtown. We are currently looking to book on either Tuesday or Thursday, depending on venue availability.

Please look for further information within the next day or two.

Respectfully,

Caroline

What have you done in your union to raise a member up? If not you, then who??
