Bargaining Update – Sunday, November 24th, 2019 CUPE3799

Still no word from the University or the Faculty Association regarding bargaining this past weekend so I think it is safe to say that we will be out on the picket line this week. I am still hopeful that something will come through prior to Monday morning. Please know that I will send out an email as soon as any information comes in if there is a resolution to bargaining this evening.

The weather looks to be changing to winter weather this week. As such the Executive have discussed how we proceed going forward. It has been decided that we are going to move to one picketing shift up at the University, from 8:00 a.m. – noon. This is the biggest shift currently when it comes to later shifts, or shifts down at the WIDC. Up at the University, there is only a handful of members picketing later in the day, so it is not cost effective or fair for Picket Captains to be out later in the day.

Moving to one shift will assist with the mounting costs associated with job action. The Paxton Shuttle Service that we are providing costs approximately $4,500.00 each week for three sets of runs a day times five days of the week (approximately 15 runs). The Executive are looking at how we can conserve costs as well with this move to one shift.

Starting tomorrow morning, Monday, November 25th, 2019 the shuttle will begin to pick up at 8:00 a.m. and will continue doing runs until 9:00 a.m. That should allow those that require a later start time due to child care/school drop off requirements. There will be five runs.

Starting at noon, the Shuttle will begin taking people back down the hill to the CN Centre until 1:00 p.m. Please make sure you know which shuttle you are taking up the hill so you can get in your four hour picketing window and to ensure we have enough room to get everyone back down the hill with the last shuttle run at 1:00 p.m.

Marlina will be down at the WIDC on Monday morning for one final round of picketing to make sure she has a chance to notify everyone at WIDC of the change to picketing.

We have three heavier tents that we can use now that have walls. We will be setting these three tents up in a line to try to create a wind break.

Let’s continue to provide letters to those addressing job action, or who are not taking an active role in job action – the Board of Governors, etc.

I will continue to monitor information coming in and keep the membership informed as new information becomes available.

For those of you that have not picked up your strike pay, Debby Foster will be at the University picket site on Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and then 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for the rest of the week.

Respectfully & in solidarity,

Caroline
